News Week - 7/17/17

It's been a busy summer! The final book in the Le Fay series has gone through a dev edit and I attached the last note from my editor--yay! I'm adding the edits now. I also started the cover art and moving on to illustrations for it as well.

The long wait for the GRAIL paperback is over... I've sent the formatted manuscript for the paperback proof so it's coming out August. Apologies for the delay! I know I had hoped that it would have been out a few months ago.

Other news: I've got the short film in progress, which I wrote and am directing for a learning experience with a small team. It's been fun to study filmmaking.

Novel 8, Novel 9, Novel 10 has been first drafted this summer. I am currently on Novel 11. (Yay!) The Le Fay series may be ending this year, but there are so many more stories that will be coming out!

My novel backlog is now giant so I am looking to expand my team. Here are open contract positions:

ARTIST - for graphic novel adaptation of CLAN (must be able to pencil, ink, letter -- coloring is not necessary).

DEV EDITORS - for sci-fi, fantasy, psych thriller novels -- older audience

PUBLICIST

MANAGER

Let me know if you recommend someone who may be suitable for the above roles or if you're interested in applying: realmlovejoy (at) gmail (dot) com

Other news:

-HENGE audiobook is out!

-Amazing artist for graphic novel adaptation is almost done with penciling our first chapter for LE FAY!

-SWORD audiobook is in progress!

Hope you're all having a wonderful summer! XO

Cheers,

HENGE - Interview with Audiobook Narrator

Today I'm sharing an interview with HENGE (Le Fay series 1) audiobook narrator and actress Isla Lindsay! She's done a fantastic job performing as Morgan le Fay. I also got to meet her during my short visit to London and she pointed me to check out a place where the Diagon Alley scene was filmed in Harry Potter. It was an amazing place!

1. Thanks for joining us on the blog, Isla! What inspired you to become an actress?

I always wanted to be an actress, from such a young age I can't remember actively making that choice.  It was a love of storytelling, a belief in the importance of empathy and a desire to explore human nature, which kept me interested though.

2. What are some of the challenges of narrating an audiobook? Have you learned anything surprising or interesting in the process that makes it different from acting for theater and film?

Each of those genres are very different and require a largely different skill set.  Audio narration is probably the furthest from traditional acting, but rests heavily on vocal technique and character work, so is also a return to the roots of drama and oral storytelling traditions.  The challenges unique to audio work include working alone (actors are social and collaborative beings by choice!) as well as the editing process which is alien to actors and can feel laborious.  Motivation is key.

3. What was your favorite part about HENGE?

I loved the magical and mythical elements woven into contemporary life, as well as the interplay between Morgan and Merlin.

4. You did a great job narrating as Morgan. Are there any aspects of Morgan that you can relate to?

Certainly, I always relate to strong female leads: their courage, sense of adventure and feisty attitudes resonate.  It is so important for young women to be exposed to characters like this whose story is not contingent on the male "hero" following his path - but rather on forging their own!  More characters like Morgan please!

5. Thank you, Isla! Anything about yourself or what you're working on that you'd like to share with us?

I am a feminist who loves fantasy literature and as an actor I am drawn to feminist work.  It has been a pleasure to work on this piece for that reason.  Up next, I will be playing Princess Matilda of Scotland in new historical feature film The Red King, shooting in the fall.

How exciting! Best of luck with your work, Isla! I look forward to seeing you play Princess Matilda.

Readers -- I hope you enjoyed the interview! The link to Isla's site is here, and the link to the HENGE audiobook is here if you want to hear her performance!

Le Fay Series - Meet Elaine!

Today I am sharing a new Le Fay character portrait. One of the new characters introduced in GRAIL

Meet Elaine Pelles!

In the old Arthurian legends, there are a few versions of Elaine--two which are particularly well known: one that is associated with the Grail, and one that is the tragic figure that falls in love with Sir Lancelot. For my version of Elaine, I chose to combine both aspects in different ways to create her. In the Le Fay series, she is the Grail Guardian, wise, strong, radiant. In HENGE you may remember that Lancelot had a photo of a blonde woman in his wallet... Well now you know who it is! Though she doesn't appear as much as the other female characters in Le Fay, I still view her as one of the core characters.

Here's a scene with Elaine:

“Don’t harm her,” Merlin says, pulling his Maven badge out of his pocket. “We’ve the legal right to be here.”
“What is that?” the lady demands.
“It’s the Maven badge.”
“I mean, why do you have it? You don’t look like Mordred to me.”
“Mordred is no longer Maven. King Uther is dead.”
The gun barrel slowly moves away from my head.
“Let me see that,” the lady says.
She walks forward, away from me.
Her head is a shock of golden curls cascading down to just below the shoulder blades. She wears torn-up jeans and a sweat-stained tank top. Her demeanor is mature though she appears young—perhaps around five years older than me.
Merlin hands her his badge. As she inspects it, Merlin explains to her the events that led up to King Uther’s accidental death. The lady pales as he finishes the story.
“Is everyone else all right?” the lady asks.
“Yes,” Merlin assures. “I understand your shock. After all, you’ve been isolated from the world for years, isn’t that right, Elaine?”
So it is her. The statue of the fountain lady swims through my mind.
“You’re the Grail Guardian?” I ask her.
Elaine turns to face me and nods. I see then that there is a glow about her. Her eyes are otherworldly, deerlike and amber-colored.

___

I hope you enjoyed meeting Elaine!
